1 June

Recognize that the inevitabilities of your behaviour – the besetting, repeated, often petty

wrongdoings, which you waste time in committing

and then waste more time in breast-beating about them – can best be understood as signals of a love and presence that will humble you by accepting you, but will not humiliate you by dominating you, however much you feel dominated

by your lesser desires.

Such a recognition is the gateway to that inner peace which draws together for good all that you really desire and which your wrongdoings obscure and hinder.

To pray, to participate in the process of

‘patient attention’ and ‘passionate engagement’,

is to be willing to place yourself on the threshold of death, and to wait there, so that new life may come to birth in you and through you.

The new born child will hold your hand and will both warm and encourage you.

That child is close relative to your own neglected inner child who does not quite believe

that your ‘children’ are welcome and their gifts appreciated.

[The first two phrases are from Alan Ecclestone in his classic Yes to God. ]

3 June

The mist clears to give you hope.

The mist descends to test your faith.

Jesus saw and lived out a vision.

Some of those who met him glimpsed that vision too and, fitfully, lived it.

But from the outset, they began to organize the vision, and so betrayed it.

That is always so.

Now, as then, the vision is our glory; the betrayal is our tragedy.

5 June

Tears soften the limescale of your being, refresh your shrivelled heart, still your agitated mind, clear the eye of your perception.

Thus softened and stilled, refreshed and cleansed, you can will the one thing needful.

6 June

If you know more than you can embody, you have to unlearn by suffering.

7 June

If you demand too much of yourself, your self will demand you recognize how partial you are

(in both senses, limited as well as biased).

8 June

‘Soul’ is not a thing, a substance, an entity,

not even your indestructible core, (like the bone we call the ‘sacrum’, which was once believed to be indestructible, from which would grow the ‘resurrection body’).

‘Soul’ is your self, under the movement of pressure, not least the pressures of your pains and contradictions, which at best evoke the trust that there is a greater power than you

that will keep you moving in the right direction.

‘Soul’ is an energy difficult for ‘body’ to contain.

‘Body’ often disperses that energy, which cannot therefore do its work towards transforming ‘body’.

The real you can so easily miscarry.

9 June

Be content with a divided mind, for the precise mind, without doubt or indecision, persecutes.

Be content with an uneasy conscience, for the supposedly guiltless conscience scapegoats and commits atrocities with an easy mind.

Be content with a sense of failure, for success puts you above others, and seduces you into ideologies.

[After Graham Greene]

10 June

Wake up from the delusion of the ego, not least from ‘inlovenesses’ – from Adonises to alcohol –

for even what is natural and can be good deludes when it becomes the only good in your life.
