Chapter 20

Control

Laughter and music rang loud and joyfully through the night air, ancient tunes written centuries ago that stirred the soul.

I smiled as Madden dragged a less than pleased looking Aljana into the throng of dancers. Despite the wolves that waved me over, I was in too much pain to join in. The offer though, that made my heart warm a little. Once the drink was flowing freely and young pups were sent to their beds, wrestling broke out too. Despite it being for fun, nobody held back. Most came away bloodied and bruised but grinning, none the less. Winners were cheered for, and losers were teased but handed more drink with no hard feelings.

When a male came over to offer me my own mug, I thanked him with a smile. I sipped greedily at the odd tasting alcohol and decided that getting drunk would be one way to sleep through the pain later. Crossing one leg over the other, I closed my eyes a moment, simply taking in the sound of a content pack. I took another sip, while not what I was used to, it was quite delicious. Sweet, but not as nice as the whisky of home.

Footsteps had me lifting my head and Orin glared down from his high horse. He snatched the mug from my hands as he crouched in front of me. "No drinking."

"Excuse me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "I think I deserve a little drink."

"It's the last thing you need. It'll slow down your healing and tomorrow we continue your lessons. You can't learn if you're hungover," he argued before standing up and leaving before I could say another word.

So he was still mad at me then.

I glared at his back, not caring who saw my clear insubordination with this stubborn ass of a male. He turned to me as if sensing my gaze when he reached Madden and his other friends. Smug eyes held mine as he drunk from the mug he'd taken from me.

“Mo mhallachd ort,” I cursed. If I wasn't in so much pain, I'd have gone after him but even so much as shifting position made my body scream.

I tore my gaze away from him and pointedly looked elsewhere, folding my arms.

A group of wolves closer to my own age settled on the ground before me. They passed around a wooden bowl, laughing and joking amongst themselves. The youngest of them, the male that had brought me the mead, leaned over. He motioned for me to partake in whatever they were eating. Painfully, I reached over, frowning at the skinny mushrooms I picked up. I wasn't naive. Even the humans at my high school had sold these in the alley behind the school.

I hesitated and looked around. Nobody seemed to pay any mind to us. It obviously wasn't frowned upon to take part in this like it was for humans.

"It help with pain," he urged in broken English, miming for me to eat.

When I shook my head, he chuckled, saying something to his friends that had them all laughing.
