In early December, we reached Mooloolaba on the east coast of Australia, making our way into the harbour between a breakwater of grey rocks and a row of black pylons. After the crew said goodbye, we explored the yacht club, which Jon declared to be ‘wonderful’ after he found a way to make the pool table produce free balls and cadged money from Mum to play the video game at the end of the bar.

On our second day in port, a tanned, broad-shouldered man came to find us in the bar. ‘I’m the commodore here,’ he said. ‘I believe you knew Owen Trewartha?’

I stared at him. This man knew Owen, our polar bear. ‘Is he here?’ I asked.

The commodore shook his head. ‘I’m sorry to tell you that Owen drowned at the end of January.’

I felt dizzy and sat down.

‘He drowned?’ asked Dad.

‘Yes. When his girlfriend got into trouble swimming off Mooloolaba beach, Owen dived in to save her. She survived but he became exhausted and didn’t make it back to the sand.’

While the commodore kept talking, I tried to shut out the thought of Owen struggling in the ocean to reach someone he loved. I wished he’d stayed with us for our trip across the Indian Ocean. If he had, maybe everything would have been different.
