"The Worst Flooding in Living Memory"

In tropical countries like Haiti, outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne illnesses tend to be more severe during the summer months because that is the time of the monsoon. Monsoons, which occur between June and September each year, are seasonal wind shifts that influence climate and precipitation. With the monsoon comes rain—but not just normal rainstorms. These rains are such torrential downpours that they often result in extensive, widespread flooding. South Asia is well known for such severe floods because the region experiences some of the heaviest monsoon rains in the world. During the monsoon season of 2007, the South Asian countries of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal were hit with disastrous floods that UNICEF referred to as “the worst flooding in living memory.”33 For more than two weeks straight, heavy rains pounded the countries, flooding rivers, inundating massive swaths of land, and covering entire villages with up to 6 feet (1.83m) of water. Thousands of people were killed, and millions of others were left homeless after their houses or huts were swept away by raging floodwaters.
