Fifteen minutes later I walked outside. Turned left. Started walking.
And I was unconnected to the world. I'd ditched my cell phone in Dumas. Couldn't use it anyway. I'd be traced.
So I was walking through the night trying to do the impossible. We live in a connected age, where you're as likely to end up on a YouTube video as you are to getting honked at in L.A. traffic. We don't know who's watching us or clicking us with their cameras. We don't know how deep the government is into our private lives. And here I was trying to buck all that. Trying to disappear. With access to tons of money.
For a woman.
Could it be done?
I couldn't know, because I had no way to get in touch with Laine.
I kept walking. It was cold. The wind whipped. Me, the L.A. boy, didn't even have an adequate coat. I could hear the waves slapping against the coast like wet towels in the hands of middle school jokesters. Or maybe it was God playing the joke. On me. Each slap a reminder that I was the stupidest guy in the world. That I thought I could ever pull this stunt.
But there was no going back, not now. And the only thing that kept me moving was the prospect of seeing her again. I kept visualizing her waiting for me at the other end. That was the only thing that kept me warm.
Where was she now? How long would it be before I saw her?
I wasn't worried about her backing out on me. After all, I was the only one who knew how to get the money. I wasn't so naive to think she would come with me without it.
But that didn't make the prospect of waiting any better. I didn't know where this guy with the boat was going to take me, or how long it would take to get there.
That's a thin thread of hope to hang onto. But it was all I had.
My body started to chill. Bad. Like an addict going through withdrawals. My knees were shaking all over the place and I must have looked like a drunk walking.
It wasn't the air that was doing it as much as the nerves catching up with me. Not having her with me, holding her, touching her, her touching me, not having that was sending my body into convulsions.
I started to run, to see if that would keep me from shaking so much.
And it worked. I got into a steady pace that kept me on my feet.
Until I reached that light pole the guy had told me about.
That's where I collapsed.
