Chapter Eighteen

Axis held his breath as he waited for her answer. He had absolutely no idea what had come over him. As a warrior who generally guarded his words, he still couldn’t believe he’d said all he had. None of it was untrue, but still, it was out of character for him, to say the least. He didn’t know how the council would react to him taking a bride without their approval. He didn’t care. It had been done before with Hix and Maggie, so he hoped that similarity of circumstances would convince the council to accept their union. Rescuing her and the others should earn him enough points to avoid them making a fuss because he wasn’t letting her go. Nova was his.

As he waited for her to take his hand, he became lost for a moment at the sight of Nova biting her lips in what seemed like deep contemplation.

Take it, he plead silently, vowing then and there to do anything to make her happy if she took his hand. He’d love and care for her always, given the chance.

“What if I don’t want to marry you?” The question coming from her pink lips was at odds with the heated look lurking behind her whiskey-colored eyes, which remained fixated on the hand he held out to her.

Despite her question, every instinct screamed that Nova wanted him just as much as he wanted her. He admired her caution, but he saw the desire she was trying to tamp down as it simmered beneath her guarded exterior. It was evident in her quickened breath and the fluttering pulse at her neck. Disappointingly, he couldn’t see the hard tips of her breasts, but he was sure the nubs were tight against the colorful fabric.

Despite the physical signs, he would never push for more than what she gave not just willingly, but enthusiastically.

“Then I will respect your wishes,” he answered with an honesty that burned his throat. The disappointment from her question was a hard pill to swallow. The hopeful feelings of a future bride that swelled his chest began deflating as she watched him silently. “It is your choice to make.”

As his hope leaked away with each passing moment, he let out a worried sigh, feeling his dream was already lost. Although he didn’t like hearing her consider the option, he would never deceive her to win her over. One thing he’d learned from the wives of his brethren is that this needed to be her choice, and if he wanted their union to succeed, he’d need to give Nova the time and space to choose him. Not choose him right now, but also for the rest of their lives.

“What happens after that?” she asked, her eyes pinning him in place. “If I say no—”

“I vow to assist you regardless of your answer,” he promised and dropped his hand with a sad smile. It sounded as if she’d made her decision and he wasn’t it. He stepped back to put space between them and the aliens that continued to watch nearby.
