At the far end of the long, desolate valley Kaal shimmered like a half-remembered dream.

“Is everyone else having trouble seeing the city, or am I just exhausted?” Gillean asked.

“I can see it plain as day,” piped Amber.

“You’re not crazy, Gil,” Catriona said. “To me it looks more like a mirage than a city.”

“It’s the magic Shara mentioned,” Erikoff said. “There’s some sort of enchantment that makes the city difficult to see unless you’re practically on top of it. That’s why Karise is having trouble locating it.”

“Lucky for the city folk,” Burgeff said.

“Not luck,” Haroun told him, “the power of our ancestors who built the city. That power is failing, but once our people are inside and the great gates are closed, Kaal will again be hidden from its enemies.”

“Quickly now,” Shara said. “We must get inside before the dragon returns and the city is discovered.”

Though everyone in the band was tired, they moved quickly across the flats in front of the city and soon came to the great gates.

Catriona marveled at the sight. Each gate was twenty feet wide and at least twice that tall. Mighty timbers held together by massive bands of bronze formed the twin doors. Indecipherable runes covered the surfaces of the gates.

The walls surrounding the gates were equally impressive, composed of titanic blocks of sand-colored stone, flaked with particles of orange metal. They stood fifty feet tall and twenty feet wide at the base. The tops were crenellated battlements, providing plenty of cover for the city’s defenders. Towers set at regular intervals along the wall’s perimeter gave the city guards a commanding view of the salt flats beyond.

As they walked through the gates, a huge mass of people rushed out to meet them. Some were guards, but most seemed to be ordinary folk glad at the return of their kin.

At the head of the group came a tall man with salt-and-pepper hair. His face was tanned and creased from living in the desert, but his brown eyes sparkled with quick wit. He wore loose-fitting, sand-colored clothing similar to that worn by Shara and Haroun. His clothes looked to be made of fine silken cloth and featured elaborate embroidery at the hems.

Around his neck he wore a large, golden medallion—obviously an indication of high office. The pendant was gold with a clear crystal set amid a sunburst design. Golden four-inch squares connected by smaller rectangles formed the medallion’s chain.

The guards who came with the man were similarly dressed, though none possessed a similar pendant. The guards carried scimitars or spears and bows.

The leader held out his arms and embraced the half-elves as they entered the city. “Shara. Haroun,” he said. “It’s so good to have both my children back.”

“Father,” Shara said, “these are the friends I met during my journey: Catriona Goodlund, Syndall Goodlund, Gillean Rickard the Third, Rohawn Blackmane, the mage Erikoff Zahn, and their allies. They’ve come to help us defend the city.”

“They escaped from the lands of the durogar,” Haroun explained, “and have no love for the dragon plaguing our lands.
