CHAPTER NINETEEN

'This is a smashing place you have here, hen,' Lou Purcell said to Amanda Cameron.

'I'm just the manager. I don't own the place.'

The restaurant was busy, brunch being a weekend special. The prices attracted a fair number of customers.

'Every ship has a captain, and you're at the helm of this place.' He washed his sausage down with coffee.

'Mind if I join you?' Amanda said.

'Pull up a pew.'

She sat down opposite him. 'Did Percy send you here, Lou?'

'What do you mean?'

'I mean, you were here last night, and now you're here today. Are you here to watch what Bruce is up to?'

Lou could feel his cheeks going red. 'Oh God, no. You're right about one thing though; I do want to see Bruce. I'm just sitting here wondering how to go about it.'

'You want to see him? Can I ask you what it's about?'

'I don't mind if you're there when I talk to him, but he might want me to speak to him in private. Do you think he would be up to seeing me?'

'Oh, I don't think he would mind.'

'I don't know if he's up to being around the public again.'

'He is, trust me. He's over there gabbing to one of the customers.'

Lou turned round. The restaurant was tacked on to the back of the pub and looked like a huge conservatory. He turned round and saw Hagan. The ex-detective looked over and came across when he saw his wife sitting with a customer.

'Lou, isn't it?' he said when he walked over. 'Percy's dad.'

'That's right, son.' Lou was about to stand up when Hagan put a hand on his shoulder.

'Don't get up on my account. What brings you up here? Percy not trust me or something?' He was smiling when he said it but there was an edge in his voice.

'Grab a seat, Bruce. And no, Percy doesn't know I'm here. I came up here all by myself. I'm a big boy now.'

Hagan sat down at the table, opposite his wife. 'I'm all ears, my friend.'

'I was going to ask for your advice, in a professional capacity.'

'As a former psychiatric patient?'

'A copper.'

'What about your own son? Percy has a lot more experience that I have.'

'I love my son to bits, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I think he was switched at birth. We like to have a laugh, but this little project I have going, well, he'd think it was a hoot and it isn't funny to me. I need to ask somebody's advice.'

'If I can be of any help, fire away.'

Lou pushed his plate away and wiped his mouth. 'I'm trying to search for my family. I found out I was adopted and I'm not sure what to do now. I spoke to the adoption agency, but they can only do so much.'

'What do you want to know?'

'I found out that my father was a judge, and that I had half-brothers. Two of them. I mean, they might be pushing up daisies now, but I would like to know.
