Chapter 8

It was a sunny morning with a slight breeze. Vero had prepared a picnic basket and spread a blanket in a field just outside the main section of the park. She’d also brought a slingball, which Zelag and I threw back and forth. We looked like three fruitcake friends spending the off work to get stoned in the park. Zelag was way too good at throwing with his stupid metal arm. He’d zip the sling and whack the ball into my chest so hard I felt like I was getting bruises, and he never missed. This unnatural accuracy was part of our plan, but for now, it was annoying. A guy and his kid were down by the water behind us playing with a little aquatic drone. Occasionally people wandered by and waved or nodded to us. No one gave us a second look. Well, not me or Zelag, anyhow.

As we played, Betti fed us tracking data on our target.

“He’s getting out of his car,” she said. “Mrs. Larsfeld and the park manager are in the reception center. He’s heading toward them. Two guards, as expected, fore and aft.”

I looked at Vero. “You ready?”

She smiled and batted her eyelashes. I rolled my eyes. “Don’t overplay it now.”

There was a spot along the path where a sweeping bougainvillea hedge had been planted. The path itself led up towards the holographic temple recreation. The park was engineered to move people towards that central focus and we were 99 percent certain that our target would pass by our location. The widow and the park director were a little bit of trouble, but Betti had a plan for them as well.

If Vero could distract the bodyguards, we’d hit them with the stunners first, then neutralize our target. I was starting to regret not bringing Jones or Ward, though I knew the two of them were now busy monitoring our second target from the roof of an apartment building.

Focus, Tommy. Stay in the moment. I felt the adrenaline rising as I spotted Perspix for the first time. He was walking out of the reception area with Mrs. Larsfeld and the manager. Behind them were two beefy guys in shades. Both guards had tattooed heads and more muscle than human bodies normally produce without injected hormones. I was pretty sure Zelag and I could take them hand-to-hand, but we might have to seriously hurt them to incapacitate them. They moved like they were trained, and their positioning was professional, close to their client without being right on top of him.

They walked closer to our position. Zelag and I threw the ball back and forth as they approached.

I saw Mrs. Larsfeld put her hand to her ear, then speak to someone. A call. Gotta be Bettina. Come on… go, go, go, I thought to myself. Larsfeld touched Perspix’s sleeve and said something to the park manager, then held up a finger to Perspix with what looked like an embarrassed apology. Back in a minute, I thought.
