THE “LIMPING WOMAN” FIGHTS THE NAZIS

The French may have given up the fight, but Hall would keep on fighting. For her, the war had just begun. As a citizen with a passport from a neutral country, she was able to leave France. Not sure of what to do, she made her way to England. While at a dinner party she met a woman named Vera Atkins, who was secretly a member of the Special Operations Executive. The SOE was the British spy agency responsible for planning and carrying out acts of spycraft and sabotage within German-occupied areas. Although born in Romania and not technically even a British citizen, Atkins had become a member of the SOE because of her intelligence, bravery, and deep network of contacts. Atkins worked in “F” section, the branch of the SOE that operated in France.

Finding people with the skills and bravery necessary to enter occupied France and work there on behalf of the British government was a constant struggle. Atkins found an ideal foreign agent in Hall. Hall knew many foreign languages, had spent long years living in Europe, and had extensive contacts in France. Most importantly, she was brave enough to accept the job! Anxious to do her part to fight against Hitler, Hall signed up with the SOE. She became the SOE’s first female operative and was trained in the many skills required of a foreign spy. Hall learned how to operate a resistance group, pass coded messages, use small arms, and many other skills.
