CHAPTER SIX

Almost everyone who lived on the mountain worked during the day, and my loneliness had yet to subside. At least here, I could do things. Leo hooked his computer up to the TV, and I had access to almost any movie I could think of. But instead, I uploaded a floor routine, pushed the couch and chair out of the way, and danced. I hadn’t realized how much I needed this, that this was so much of what had been missing from my life since I’d shifted.

“Looks like you had a party.” Leo’s cheeks were flushed from the cold when he came back. Or so I’d thought. I shuddered once again at the taste of blood on his lips, but it didn’t stop me. I hated that I was willing to accept something so against what I believed in, simply because he did it, but I was so happy to see him.

“Oh, yeah.” I might have gone a little overboard with my routine. I’d had some trouble with some of the more difficult moves, already I’d lost some of my core strength. That wasn’t good, especially since I wasn’t sure if I had any control over my body shifting back to doe. If it happened again, I needed to be lean, strong, and smart. I could guarantee I’d never be this lucky again. “I was practicing.”

At least he didn’t walk in when I was doing back flips off the couch.

“I want to see.” He dragged his eyes up and down my body as he sat on the misplaced couch. I’d stripped down to my bralette, the T-shirt getting in the way, and my skin was still dewy from exertion.

My cheeks flushed. Or maybe flushed more. “You do? I was practicing.”

“Absolutely. Show me what you’ve got.” Leo leaned back on the couch and readied himself for the show.

I jerked my head to the other side of the room. “You need to sit in the chair.”

Leo’s brow furrowed, confused. “Why?”

“You’ll see.” I cued up the video I’d been mimicking, squeezing my eyes shut before I went to work. Even though I performed for pretty decent crowds at semi-finals and other competitions, something about this was all new. Leo would be watching me for much different reasons than a bunch of parents or people who enjoyed gymnastics.

The dance had quickly become second nature to me, I let my body follow the music, jumping and moving along with the rhythm. I had to modify some of the routine, even with the furniture pushed back against the wall, I didn’t have the room for all of the flips and aerials. That’s where the couch came in handy. I used it as a bounce card, slightly aware that Leo might be horrified by the way that I was treating his furniture, but not really caring. I’d make it up to him later. Now that I was warmed up, I was able to really get some air. Thank Gods for vaulted ceilings.

The routine only lasted a few minutes, and out of instinct, I put my arms up and posed when I finished.
