ANOTHER PET
Walt still mourned the loss of his dog. He was very lonely. But he didnât give up. He kept his eyes open for a new pet. Just a few mornings later he found it.
It was a baby mouse. It was half frozen in the cold October morning. Walt had just headed up a customerâs walk to deliver a paper. He saw something moving in the snow.
Walt stopped to look. Then he spied the mouse. âSay, little fellow, what are you doing out here? Something is liable to get you.â
Walt had to laugh. The mouse reared up like a prizefighter. It began to spar with its front feet. âWell, Iâll have to admit youâre a game little guy. But you donât have to worry anymore. Youâll be safe with me.â
Walt picked up the mouse. He was careful not to let it bite him. The mouse was trembling. Walt put it in his pocket.
âYou need a friend, and I need a pet,â said Walt. âSurely we Disneys can afford to feed a mouse even if we canât afford a dog.â
Walt hurried on as fast as he could. Heâd try to get his papers delivered a little early. Then heâd have time left to play with his mouse. But he had no such luck!
Walt had hurried too fast. He missed a customer. Mr. Disney was waiting when Walt returned home. Walt had to take another paper and go right back again. After that things went from bad to worse.
There was no time for breakfast. Walt barely made it on time to his downtown paper corner. Then a storm came up. Walt was almost late for school. It wasnât until arithmetic class that Walt remembered the mouse.
By this time the baby mouse had had a nap. It had awakened warm and comfortable. Next thing on the program was breakfast. The mouse began to explore Waltâs pocket. Then it found a way out. The first thing Walt knew, his pet was sitting on his desk.
Walt reached out carefully. He wanted to get the mouse back into his pocket before the teacher saw it. All would have been well if the mouse hadnât begun to spar again.
Boys seated near Walt watched with interest. Some began to giggle. This drew the attention of the girls. Of course, the girl nearest Walt had to be afraid. âE-eek!â she screamed.
Then trouble broke loose. The mouse ran. Girls climbed on their desks. All of them began to scream. Walt went after his mouse, and the other boys followed Walt. They wanted to help him capture the mouse.
At last the tiny mouse was caught. Walt held it in his hand. âItâs shaking,â he said. âItâs frightened half to death.â
âWell, what about us?â cried the girls. âWeâre frightened too.â
âWalter Disney, what am I going to do with you?â asked the teacher. âOne day you go to sleep in class. Another day you draw pictures when you should be working. And now you bring a mouse to class.â
âItâs only a little mouse,â said Walt.
