Both Series EE and ā€œIā€ bonds are accrual bonds, meaning that the interest is paid at redemption rather than in periodic installments. The interest compounds semi-annually.

There is a one-year holding period before either can be redeemed and both Series EE and ā€œIā€ bonds held less than five years are subject to a three-month interest penalty.
