The land on which now lies Leicester Square belonged to the Sidney family, earls of Leicester, who built their enormous London mansion on its north side and, to the south, laid out streets and houses in the 1670s ‘for the good and benefit of the family… and the decency of the place before Leicester House’. At that date this was a properly respectable neighbourhood; the poet Matthew Prior (1664–1721) lived at Number 21. On one of Verelst’s ‘flower pots’ Prior penned:

When fam’d Varelst this little Wonder drew

Flora vouchsaf ’d the growing Work to view.

Finding the Painter’s Science at a Stand,

The Goddess snatch’d the Pencil from his Hand,

And finishing the Piece, She smiling said;

Behold One Work of Mine, that ne’er shall fade.
