Chapter Nine

The next morning, Ammon awoke, feeling sore in places that he’d once thought were ghost towns. But making love to Kohana was worth it. Definitely worth it. With a smile, he opened his eyes, expecting to find Kohana curled up at his side. But he wasn’t. Confused, Ammon sat up, wincing as his shoulder screamed.

He ignored his throbbing shoulder and looked around. “Kohana?”

At once, he saw the other man sitting on a log in front of a fire. He held a bushel of bananas in his arms.

Relieved, Ammon stood up and stretched. “Morning.”

“Good morning.” Kohana grinned at him in the same boyish way he always did, but there were bags under his eyes and stress wrinkles at the corner of his mouth.

“You didn’t sleep at all, did you?” Ammon felt guilty that he’d managed to enjoy a full night’s rest when Kohana clearly hadn’t slept.

Shrugging, Kohana peeled a banana. “No, but I’m all right.”

“You should have woken me up,” Ammon said. “I could have taken a turn watching for Matwau.”

“If Matwau came, he would have taken you down before I had the chance to defend you. Having you keep watch wouldn’t have been a good idea.”

“Still, you can’t stay awake every night.” Ammon sank down onto the log beside the other man. Their legs brushed, and his heart sped.

“Are you worried about me?”

“Of course. You look exhausted. Who wouldn’t be worried?”

Kohana placed his hand on Ammon’s knee, and if Ammon had thought that his heart was pounding before, it was nothing compared to now. “You’re kind, but don’t worry. I’m strong enough to handle this.”

“If you’re sure.”

Kohana nodded, then offered him a banana.

Though he would have given his right foot to eat anything other than a banana or fish, he took what was offered to him.

He wrinkled his nose as he picked at the piece of fruit. “Yum. Bananas.”

“Sick of bananas, huh?”

“You have no idea.” And to think bananas had been one of his favorite snacks before this. “I don’t know if I want to eat it or squash it.”

“Well, if it makes you feel better, I have an idea that will get you off this island. Then you can go back home and never eat bananas again.”

The words made Ammon freeze. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah. Actually, your words from last night gave me the idea.” Kohana stared into the flames. “Because it’s so hot, some areas of the island can become really dry. I think we should light the trees on fire. The smoke will attract attention.”

“What?” A huge fire wouldn’t just attract attention from boats and airplanes but from Matwau as well. “Matwau’s pack will see. And what if we can’t control the fire once it starts? We could burn this place to the ground. We’ll be worse off than we were before.”

Kohana stood and started to pace. “I don’t think we have to worry too much about the whole island burning. For the most part, it’s only dry toward the southeast. The fire will eventually put itself out.
