Huge steps taken - Tuesday

Maria Dobson was livid and far removed from displaying any fruitage of the spirit the day after the elders visit. She was seething and found it hard to look at her husband over breakfast. She knew her children were not telling lies. A mother knows her children. These older men of the congregation were instruments in the hands of the Watch Tower and blindly followed every directive that came from them, causing them to make monumentally disastrous decisions.

Maria never knew that there was not a single letter from the Society that directed elders to report child sex abuse to the proper authorities; instead elders were always instructed to contact their nearest Branch Office for information on how to handle a matter. But, once again, there is not a single incident of the Branch Office recommending that police should be involved.

So Maria had made up her mind to go against the counsel of the ‘glorious’ ones who took the lead.

Paul was at work and Naomi and Aaron were at school. Maria had thought long and hard all morning about the situation and she knew there would be consequences hot on her heels for the action she was about to take.

She walked into the police station to be met by a Duty Sergeant sitting at an open desk. He was doing stuff on his mobile until he saw Maria, so he picked up a document on his desk and made pretence that he had only noticed her.

“Good morning, madam. How can I help? He said, standing up out of courtesy. “Please...” he gestured for her to sit opposite him.

“My name is Maria, Maria Dobson. I’d like to report a matter,” she said nervously as she sat down.

“Certainly. Of course.” He took a pen in his hand, ready to take notes.

“It’s of a very delicate and serious nature.”

“Can I ask you specifically what it concerns?”

“Yes, it’s regards child sex abuse.”

His expression changed and he began nodding. “Yes, I understand. Please let me get you someone who will be better equipped to help you. I won’t be a moment.”

Maria nodded and smiled and watched the officer disappear through a door behind him.

A few minutes later he was followed by a female officer, a young woman in her late thirties. “Mrs Dobson, is that right?”

“Yes, Maria.”

They shook hands. “I’m DCI Mary Lawton and I work closely with the local authorities. Can we go and chat somewhere quiet?”

“That would be good, yes,” nodded Maria.

She was led into a bright room with an oak table and soft chairs, and this was Maria’s first time in a police station in an official capacity. Yes she had dropped off Watch Tower tracts at many entrances in the past but this was a whole new ball game to her .

“Please sit down. Can I get you a coffee, tea or something?”

“A tea, if it’s no trouble,” she said, sitting opposite a notepad that the officer had placed on her side of the desk.

“No problem. Sugar and milk?”

Maria nodded and the officer returned two minutes later carrying drinks in paper cups.
