What to do with the light that cannot be contained,

the woman that will not be held? What does she satisfy,

century to century? Treading on cobblestones

with her cloth shoes, then with a cigarette in hand,

black rain jacket, down a tear-stained lane in Shoreditch.

She has been traded for glazed ware, for piecework,

for her brothers, restless in school, and an island

where houses were tied down before typhoons sang.

When she glows with the knowledge of her place in time,

we see the patterns etched onto her polished brow.

When we visit her house she heats the kettle for tea

that tastes of mountain streams and creamy flowers,

we admire the single bough in its porcelain vase,

as if grace were our means of escape, not hers.
