Warm sunlight wakes me the following morning, and I realize I’m still in Samson’s room. In his bed, in fact, although he’s nowhere to be seen. I don’t remember him putting me to bed, but I’m tucked in, so he must have. Smiling, I reach out and stretch. When my hand hits a piece of paper, I look over curiously.

It’s a note, folded in half on the pillow next to mine. Grabbing it, I open it to find the most impeccably precise man’s handwriting I’ve ever seen. Somehow, it doesn’t surprise me that Samson’s handwriting is as beautiful as he is.

Penelope -

I didn’t want to wake you, but I’ll be with Orion and Mitchell all morning discussing logistics for the interview. I’ll find you later to conclude what we started last night.

Samson

Idon’t know if my heart could feel any fuller than it does right now. Warmth spreads through my limbs as I stretch in Samson’s bed, inhaling his deep, clean scent.

My stomach chooses that moment to grumble loudly, so I roll out of bed and grimace at my wrinkled green dress, forgotten on the floor. I shuffle around the room until I find my flats, then head to my room to change. After throwing my jeans and tee back on, I head for the front of the house to see what I can scrounge for breakfast, my stomach rumbling loudly the whole way.

When I hear a polite cough behind me on the stairs, I turn. Griz’s bright smile greets me as he descends the stairs quietly. He’s huge, as big as Samson and definitely bigger than the other alphas I’ve met.

“How are you so damn quiet?” I ask. “You and Samson both, you’re ridiculously quiet for being so big.”

Griz’s smile widens, revealing perfectly straight white teeth. “Perks of being an alpha, I suppose. Although, I scare Mal constantly when she doesn’t hear me coming. I’m working on being louder,” he says thoughtfully.

“Shame on you for scaring the nicest person on the planet,” I grumble half-heartedly.

“She truly is, isn’t she? She’s so good for Orion, he’s lucky to have her. Well, they’re lucky to have found each other, considering the state of the world.”

“And what about you?” I prod. “No special woman in your life?” I’m just waiting to see if he mentions Jude, but he smiles again, softer this time.

“My heart is taken, although she doesn’t return the sentiment. I think you already knew that.” Griz’s smile is wry as he raises one dark, beautifully manicured brow.

I snort in disagreement. “I feel very called out Griz; I’m just interested in your life.”

“You’re a very bad liar, Pen.” He chuckles. “Mal is in the kitchen,” he says as my heart squeezes to pieces in my chest. My bestie.

“I’m so fucking glad she’s not dead,” I murmur as he laughs out loud. Mal is already seated at the island, a romance novel in her hand.

“How’d you get those out here? I thought they were all in your apartment?”

She smiles at Griz as he starts pulling ingredients out of the fridge, setting them on the countertop.
