And there she was. Anastasia. Even if I hadnât momentarily met the Dire Wolf she crushed on, Iâd have known it was Hunter. Sheâd described him to me so many times and with so much detail that even in the low light of the cellar it was crystal clear, down to the scar on his face. It was hard to see in the low-light, but it was there all the same. Scars looked bad on some people, but somehow it worked with his already rugged features.
âAnastasia.â I said her name even though I already knew she couldn't hear me. Sometimes you just know things without trying them out. It came as no surprise that she failed to even look up at me. Instead she kept singing, and Hunter kept holding her and rocking her slowly.
Take me out to sea. Take me out to sea and find me a home. You can stay with me. Out at sea. Let the moon be our guide. Let the wind be our breath. Take me out to sea.
I knew the song by heart. It was a sad song. One we learned as children and that our parents learned and their parents before. Although it starts out so hopeful with a couple ready to escape and build a home, it ended so differently. Cade and I stood there quietly as she continued and reached the last stanza.
Take me out to sea. Take me out to sea to find my forever home. You cannot stay with me. Your grave is a long time from here. Let my tears sustain you. Let my blood show you the way. Take me out to sea so you can find your home.
Most of our songs were sad. Most of our history was sad. At least the parts we were asked to study. There were great victories and joy too, but those stories were buried beneath the devastating ones about death and destruction. It had all seemed normal to me. But now things were changing. My views were changing, and I was changing.
âItâs awful.â Cade stood frozen as he listened.
âHer singing?â
âOf course not. Her voice is beautiful.â
It was. Breathtakingly beautiful. I could sing, but not like my friend. Iâd like to say I wasnât jealous but that wasnât true. I was. But sometimes jealousy was okay. It could help you aspire to be something better.
âWhen I got out⦠I assumed theyâd be okay.â
âItâs not like you wanted to leave them.â I didnât know the whole story, but I knew there was no way Cade would leave anyone if he didnât have to. He might have had a tough exterior, but I was already learning just how different he was inside that shell.
âBut I did leave.â He stared off past Anastasia and Hunter. âYes, only because I had to. There were other people who needed saving.â
âIf you were anyone else Iâd think you were being full of yourself with that comment.â I didnât need to say more.
âMy life has been hectic the past few years.
