At an ungodly hour, Big was wakened, bleary-eyed. Earl explained graphically what Rabbit could do with his order to wake up, and Rabbit pointedly noted this insubordination in his little black book. Big could not imagine Wasp Tongue sparing any time to listen to this pettifogging catalogue, or for the pettifogger himself.

Soon afterwards, Big watched The People as they swallowed their breakfast gruel. Their excitement was almost palpable. Everyone knew that the Ulunsuti had been recovered. And not one of them had any more idea than Big to what use Wasp Tongue would turn her newfound trophy

Peter was noticeably surly. He avoided conversation, even with Big. Rabbit separated them again, sending Big and Earl off to scrub the communal bathrooms.

‘How long have you been at this?’ Big asked, when he was sure they were alone.

‘A few weeks. Things kind of blew up after Wide Eye died. Old Tassel was the obvious choice for a new leader. He’d been with Wide Eye for years. Wide Eye even let him publish commentaries on his work. What does Wasp Tail know? She just mesmerised the old guy in his dotage.’

Big had not expected such disrespect towards the late and revered leader. ‘How is it that Old Tassel’s still in place and you’re in the punishment detail?’

‘The old Wasp is the model of a corporate climber. She’s far too clever to try and push Old Tassel out yet. Half The People would go with him.’ Earl paused and smiled. ‘Which means half the money that just keeps on rolling in. I don’t know how many New Cherokee there are, but it runs into the thousands, what with all the centres.’

‘I thought this was the lot.’

‘Heck, no. There are centres all over the world – from Moscow to Bangkok. Forty-nine live-in members makes a centre. Then there are the outsiders who are trying to recruit enough people to have their own little club.’

‘Why forty-nine?’ Big asked.

‘How did you get here?’ Earl shook his head in disbelief. ‘You don’t have a clue.’

‘It’s a long story. Humour me, please.’

‘Seven by seven,’ Earl said. ‘It’s the sacred number of the Cherokee.’

There was a break in the conversation. Big concentrated on scouring the tiles of the communal shower.
