Sam did a stint as a volunteer in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, where he helped paint houses for people whose homes were devastated by the floods. At first he found it a little scary and uncomfortable to walk up to strangers’ homes and find out what they needed him to do. But as the week went on, he grew more comfortable with it. “I got the absolutely rewarding sense that they were just so happy with what we did; it made me feel happy, and that was the best part of the experience,” he declared. “At the end of the day, it’s a rewarding feeling knowing that I’m helping people, and that feels good, because I’m not doing it for the money.”
“One thing I’m always questioning is, how meaningful is what I’m doing?” Sam continued. “Am I putting my whole heart into it? I want to make sure that the job I’m doing is one I’m doing meaningfully, that I am putting my whole heart into it. So I say, don’t try to get anything out of it other than a rewarding sense of knowing that you’re doing it with your whole heart.”
Being able to give back to something that helped you along the way is also a powerful takeaway from a volunteering experience. Azeem, now a senior, said,
As a high school student, I went back and volunteered at my elementary school, helping teachers grade papers, playing with the pre-K and kindergarten kids, and just helping the school with whatever work they assigned me to. And I realized that I was helping the school with something they may have been unable to do. I was happy to be giving back to the school that helped shape me into the person I am today. It made me realize that volunteer work is not a chore or an assignment; it was an activity I wanted to do. The vice principal made it clear he was very pleased with my work and kept thanking me; it made me feel satisfied and grateful that I was able to do it.
