Chapter Nine

There was no official search the next day. Conners explained why when Lady called to tell him about what she had learned from Doyle.

“Someone else is in charge of the search now,” said Conners, sounding resigned about it. Not upset. Just resigned. “Do you have any other details from your friend?”

“Well, first of all, Doyle isn’t my friend. He’s the creepy guy who lives upstairs. And second… No, not really. Sorry.” Lady hadn’t told him the part about going into the woods alone. She knew he would tell her not to, and she wasn’t certain whether or not going into the woods alone was an eventuality.

“All right.” Conners sounded resigned about that as well. “Call me and let me know if you find out anything else.”

Ms. Poole let Lady take the day off. If you could call investigating a day off. Part of her missed days off being spent on the computer or in front of the television. Mostly she liked the new direction her life had taken.

For starters, she had a boyfriend now. She met him at the library a few hours before noon. She had hoped to bring Otsuya with her, but Doyle had her otherwise occupied. “Hey,” said Lady, coming up to the counter alone and leaning heavily against it.

Crispin looked up from the book he was reading, startled like he hadn’t heard her come in. “Oh.” The startled expression on his face quickly shifted into a smile. “Hey. I didn’t expect you here so quick. Did my aunt let you borrow her car?”

“No.”

“Oh… well, I guess I just lost track of time.”

Lady tried to get a look at the page he was on. The books were thick and not bound like most books in the library. The colors of the pages were varying shades of white, like some had been added later on. “What are you reading?”

“Town history.” He made a vague motion at the book. “I can’t say that I’ve found anything regarding a bunker in the woods.”

Lady wasn’t surprised. She couldn’t imagine how much Crispin had already pored through looking for that information. “And I’m going to assume you already tried the internet.”

Crispin chuckled. “Yeah. Dom has been looking into things on that end. I think he’s even checked other places, places that would have record of something like that being built. He told me it was probably built by the person using it or maybe by someone they inherited it from.” He shook his head. “It’s hard to say.”

“I learned a little about it.” Lady proceeded to recount what Doyle had told her. Again, she left out the part about going into the woods alone. “So the bunker is almost certainly involved. I’m kind of wondering about the boyfriend. Do you think he has anything to do with all this?”

Crispin frowned thoughtfully. “I haven’t looked into him much. I know Dom did. He showed me a picture of him last night. I know it doesn’t prove anything one way or the other, but… He didn’t really look like the type to live in a bunker.
