Note It is thought that this elegant young man, dressed in the height of fashion, and in the Queen’s colours of black and white, is the Earl of Essex.

Head His hair is fairly long, and he is clean-shaven apart from a delicate, almost imperceptible moustache.

Body The closely gathered pleats of a cartwheel ruff radiate around his neck. Nonchalantly thrown over his left shoulder is a short, fur-lined cloak with fur revers. The doublet that swells into a peascod belly shape is made from interlocking bands of serrated black and white fabric, and fastened down the front with ornamented buttons. The sleeves have been padded to produce a fashionably swollen appearance, and they are finished with plain cuffs. Very brief trunkhose and white stockings complete the outfit.

Accessories A narrow belt is just visible above the hose. The white shoes have long, pointed toes and pinked uppers.
