Chapter 3
Visible Knowledge and Companies
This chapter addresses the questions: How should visible knowledge be organized? How should it change your managers? Your development process? Your research organization? Your test organization? Your supplier relationships? Each of these questions could be answered at book length, but I hope that the brief, introductory answers that follow will be of some use.
Organizing Your Knowledge
The issue of knowledge management is a common challenge in organizations. As an organization shifts toward a conscientious focus to create and reuse knowledge, the need to organize that knowledge so that it can effectively be used when needed is heightened. Adding to the challenge is that while knowledge may be distinct from the people who create it, it is impossible to completely separate the two. Many companies rely almost exclusively on the knowledge that is in the heads of their people, and miss out on the opportunity to build and share knowledge at an exponential rate. There are several principles to consider related to creating and organizing your knowledge that weâll discuss here.
Organize departments, as far as possible, around knowledge of the operational value streamâthe suppliers, manufacturing system, product, and customers.
Expect everyone to create visible knowledgeâthe departmental management focuses primarily on creating reusable knowledge.
Hold everyone responsible for delivering and sharing the knowledge they have, and getting the knowledge they need.
