THREE-PART FUGUE

1. Evaluation of Lines I Wrote Yesterday

When I wrote

dusk,

the time of day when one can use a word like ‘vermilion’

what I meant was

I wish I could write like Emily Dickinson.

When I wrote

I’ve sustained losses, though not to Job-like proportions

I meant

goddammit, they’re Job-like proportions.

2. Barber and Pigeon

In the Italian section of Brooklyn,

the barber steps outside his shop and swats

pigeons from their roosting place. He’s using

the broom he sweeps up with. “Get out!” he yells.

“When people see shit, they do not want haircut!”

You can see the point of the man, for whom

every day is streaked with sour white spray.

And you can see the point of the pigeon,

who wants only a small place to arrange his wings.

When it comes to desire, can one discern

man from pigeon?
