Latin Verse

In English a line of verse is produced when words are arranged in a pattern by the natural stress or ictus of the words used. For example:

The ploúghman hómeward plóds his wéary wáy

has a pattern of unstressed syllable followed by stressed which is one of the commonest patterns in English verse. On the other hand if we write

Hómeward plóds the plóughman his wéary wáy

we do not have a line of verse since there is no regular pattern.

In early Latin verse also the pattern was formed by the natural stress of the words used. For example:

málum dábunt Metélli Náevio póetae

is a line of verse in the early Saturnian metre, and verse with stress patterns continued to flourish in less educated circles as is indicated by the following line of a military marching song:

écce Cáesar núnc triúmphat qúi subégit Gálliás.
