‘When was Lorna moved from the home office?’

‘Six months ago’.

‘About the same time that Jade and Fletcher Johnston moved up here?’

‘That’s right’ said Karen. ‘But what are you trying to make that mean?’

‘And as home secretary she would’ve known where John Davies was after he’d been released from the secure children’s home and given a new identity?’ Bradshaw went on, ignoring Karen’s question. ‘Or at least had access to that information?’

Karen hesitated. ‘Well yes. She would’ve at least had access but it would’ve been classified information’.

‘And did she ever talk about it?’

‘No’ said Karen. She shifted around slightly on her chair. ‘No, she never did. Like I said, it would’ve been classified information so why would she have divulged anything about it?’

‘Well at least not with you?’

‘No, never with me. Never. We never had that kind of conversation’.

‘She must’ve been pretty pissed off when she was demoted?’

Karen rolled her eyes to the heavens. ‘I’ve never seen anyone with a temper like it. She went absolutely ballistic’. She well remembered the tantrum Lorna had thrown after her demotion. It had been absolutely epic. Everybody stayed well out of the way that day. ‘You see, being home secretary is one of the big jobs in government where one decision like the decriminalisation of homosexuality or the granting of an asylum seeker case can be life changing to the people or person concerned. Looking after social security is just one of those jobs that has to be done by someone in government. It’s about taking a pot of taxpayers’ money and dividing it in the way you think is fairest and most efficient’.

‘I wonder how many people on universal credit would agree with you there’ said Bradshaw. ‘But what you’re saying is that being in charge of social security doesn’t give her as wide a profile as being home secretary’.

‘Yes’ Karen agreed. ‘That’s exactly it’.

‘So she must’ve been resentful after that career punch on the nose?

Karen smirked. ‘I think you could say that, yes’.

‘Enough to break the rules for an old friend?’

Karen felt nervous. She felt like she’d been led into some sort of trap. ‘What are you saying?’

‘Nothing other than the meaning of the words I use, Karen’ said Bradshaw. ‘Why? Is there something you want to tell us that may not be obvious to our line of questioning?’
