Chapter Nine

After his father made the introductions, Jerry spoke to those sitting in the chairs. Instead of looking at the crowd as a whole, he focused on one person at a time, talking to them and them alone, telling of what he saw for them. It was the first time he’d given readings – until today, he didn’t know he could.

A man with a goatee stood and asked the question Jerry had been dreading. “What happens after we die?”

Jerry steadied himself and gave the only response he had. “I have no idea.”

The man huffed. “What do you mean you don’t know? Are you the portal to the other side or not?”

Jerry focused on the man. “No, sir, I am not. I sometimes know things before they happen, and I see and speak with spirits, but I am not a portal.”

The man wasn’t satisfied. “You claim to see and talk to ghosts, yet you’re telling me you have never asked what’s on the other side?”

“No, sir, that’s not what I said. I said I don’t know. I’ve asked plenty of times, but there seems to be some rule that spirits are not supposed to tell us what’s on the other side.”

“You’re saying the white light doesn’t exist?”

Jerry held firm. “I never said that.”

“So, it does exist?”

“What you believe is your belief. I am not here to tell you whether it is real or imagined. I talk to spirits. The ones I have spoken with do not think it prudent that I know what comes next. I know there are spirits. I know my partner is the ghost of a K-9 police dog. I know what I see and don’t find it in good taste to go around making things up just because it is what some want to hear.”

“So you are saying people are lying about there being a white light?” Goatee Man pressed.

“I’m saying I haven’t seen it,” Jerry repeated.

A round woman with curly hair waved to get his attention. When Jerry looked in her direction, she stood and cleared her throat. “My late husband has visited me twice weekly over the past two years.”

Jerry smiled, glad for the turn in the conversation. “That’s nice.”

She shook her head. “No, you don’t understand. I want you to speak with him. I need him to know that while I really appreciate his visits, I would like him to use someone else. Someone a bit younger, maybe someone such as yourself.” She looked him up and down and sighed.

The woman was right. Jerry didn’t understand. “I’m afraid I’m not following you.”

“My friend Bernie and I watched the movie Ghost together a few years back, and a week later, my late husband Ernie started inhabiting Bernie’s body to come back to…” She looked from side to side as a red blush crept up her face. “He comes back to have relations with me. I’ve tried to tell him I’d rather him come back as someone a bit taller and with a little more stamina. But he keeps taking over Bernie instead.
