Chapter 12

The mood as we spend the night at Agne’s village is as different to our previous visit as it’s possible for two nights to be.

Whereas before there was dancing, singing, feasting, as well as moments of mourning and honesty, this time everyone is grim-faced and getting ready for battle. The men and women take out the swords, spears, bows and arrows that they have only put away very recently, and set to work sharpening them and getting them ready for yet another fray.

Although we could easily have forgotten to eat, Valdes orders for a meal to be served. I’m grateful to him for that, at least, even if he’s managed to generally make things worse with his needling, manipulative comments.

“Thank you, Valdes,” I say grudgingly, when the provisions are laid out for my company and the people who will serve tomorrow as my soldiers. He bows.

“You’re very welcome, dróttning.”

I’m too nervous to eat a thing, but I encourage everyone else to consume what they can. We will need our strength in the coming days, after all, and who knows when we will next have a chance to sit down and break bread together.

I look around as the meal is served, at all the grimly determined faces of the village people. Agne has been helpful in rallying them to my cause, but they needed very little persuasion, just as Agne said.

According to Haki’s report, the castle is being run by a small but vicious band of disgruntled northerners under the leadership of Shar. He believes that she won’t be able to withstand a significant attack, but I know that the longer Shar sits on the throne again, the more she might be able to make people believe that that’s where she really belongs after all.

Well played, Shar.

I pass an uneasy night lying in my tent between Haki and Eirik.

At first being in the tent, shielded from everyone’s gaze is a relief. I can cry my tears, feel everything that I need to feel, so that I have enough strength to face tomorrow.

But the night’s too long. The other two sit up, watching over me.

“Go to sleep,” I say, reaching up to pull them down next to me.

“We don’t need sleep,” Haki replies, with a smile that tells me clearly that he’s tired. “You need us to watch over you more than we need to sleep.”

“Rest,” Eirik agrees, stroking my hair. “You don’t need to worry about us.”

I’m too tired to argue. I close my eyes and try to ignore the racing thoughts in my mind, instead focusing on the sense of perfect safety I feel nestled in between the two of them.

When I open my eyes before dawn, however, they’ve both slumped over into a doze.

I’m glad.

I will need them to be strong in the coming days - now more than ever, since I will only have the two of them by my side.

I rise and dress in my war clothes - the scarlet tunic and leggings, the breastplate and helmet, with the dagger hanging at my thigh and my sword belt strapped around my waist.
