Chapter 9

Marking and Selecting of Photographs

Marking and choosing photos from the Catalog

In this chapter, we will cover the marking and selection of photographs, which is the stage prior to editing. The selection here should be understood, in this chapter, as the effective choice of pictures that will be edited or used for various purposes, such as: creating a slide show, making an export, or generating a web page. It should not be confused with the pure and straightforward selection of photographs in the Filmstrip or the Grid View Mode of the Library module. This task, such as selecting files on the computer's operating system, was presented in the previous chapter.

The Lightroom software has several features that will allow the filtering of selected photographs, in addition to their marking and selection. This task aims to eliminate from view everything that is not necessary, such as blurred photographs, for example. Or because they do not apply at a specific time and for a particular purpose. These filtering features will be explicitly covered in the next chapter.

Chapter objectives:

➢ the importance of selection;

➢ how to select;

➢ understanding the importance of the task of discarding photographs;

➢ how to classify; and

➢ how to label.

Several actions to select photographs have already been presented in the previous chapter. The purpose now is to present practical suggestions for its use.

Note:

Each photographer has his own way of signaling, rejecting, classifying, and labeling his photographs. The Lightroom software is very flexible in these tasks. Thus, there is no right or wrong way to do them. The purpose of this chapter is to present the process used by the author, which may not be the best for all users. After understanding the principles of selection, you can develop your own method.
