Capturing Dual Sound

Using dual sound is common in HDSLR audio. With dual sound, a separate device, such as a recorder by the manufacturer Zoom, is used to capture the audio. The audio is then mixed together with the video after the fact. The separate device features a better audio processing chip and a larger XLR input, which produces a better quality microphone than the on-camera microphone and results in less noise.

For most postproduction workflows, you mute the camera sound on the Timeline and align the audio to the track to play the higher quality sound from the external device. This is a common workflow when using Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut along with a third-party plug-in called PluralEyes.

You can accomplish dual sound in Photoshop, but it’s a trial-and-error process because there are no tools for syncing the audio sources in Photoshop. Instead, you nudge the audio around until it lines up. You can, however, use things like the clicking sound of a slate or even the clapping of hands to create a sync point. This gives you both a visual and an audible cue point.
