When Vidalia came outside after art history the next day, the girls had gathered around a table in the courtyard.
âSo where are you off to this weekend?â Vidalia asked.
âStaying here,â said Becky. âLast weekend sort of did me in. Maybe Iâll try to do like you and absorb a little of the local culture. Do you want to go out Saturday night?â
âI canât,â Vidalia said. âIâm going away, actually.â
She had called Julien the night before to tell him she could go down south after all. Heâd been happy, and Vidalia was looking forward to the weekend with him and Margie.
âAgain? You are such a hypocrite,â whined Becky. âWhere to?â
âMy friend Julien, the guy from the bookstore, asked me to go to the country,â she said. âTo his parentsâ house.â
âWow, meeting the family,â she said. âWhat does Marco think of this?â
âJulien and I are just friends,â Vidalia said. âA bunch of people are going. Besides, Marcoâs away this week, doing some work stuff.â
âWhat does he do, anyway?â asked Becky. âHe doesnât look that old.â
âHeâs nineteen,â Vidalia said. âHe dropped out of college to work in the art business. Heâs trying to start a gallery.â Vidalia hardly noticed that she was repeating Marcoâs lie even though she knew the truth now.
âHuh,â said Becky, looking at her for a long moment. âWell, Heather, do you want to go out on Saturday?â
Heather shrugged, her shoulders deeply tanned under her white tank top. She must have been lying out, Vidalia thought. She herself had never tanned. Her hair might be dark, but her skin was pale as milk.
âSure,â Heather said. âWhat do you want to do?â
âI donât know, go dancing?â said Becky. She looked across the courtyard at Kenji, who was sitting alone. âKenji will come!â she said brightly.
âYou havenât spoken to him since Brittany, have you?â asked Heather, giving Becky a skeptical look.
âWell, no, but . . .â Becky paused and then turned firmly to Heather. âYouâre right. Itâs time to make up for my sins.â
She stood up and walked over to him.
Vidalia watched Becky position herself in front of Kenji, her hand on her hip, a sorrowful expression on her face. He looked up at her, squinting and suspicious.
âSheâll probably get him back, too,â Vidalia said. Becky amazed her with a totally unabashed determination to go after what she wanted. She waited for a reaction from Heather. They hadnât talked since their moment at Versailles on Monday, but Beckyâs behavior seemed like a safe subject.
Heather didnât answer, though. Vidalia turned to her and saw that sheâd leaned her head in her arms on the table in front of her.
âWhatâs up, Heather?â she asked. âAre you okay?â
Heather looked up at her, a blank expression on her face.
âIâm just . . . I donât know,â she said, shaking her head. Tears came into her eyes. âI guess Iâm not having such a great time here.â
âWhy not?â Vidalia asked, surprised. âDonât you like your family?â She remembered the happy-looking young couple whoâd picked her up at the airport.
