CHAPTER 12

Greta

With my head covered and the loud gunshots, I have to shout for Aiden to hear me. “You said your father wouldn’t hurt you!”

Keeping his eyes on the road, he swerves around a smaller car that’s pulling out of an intersection, cursing as he does so. “He won’t!” He shouts back. “My father’s an expert shot. He won't hit me, but he’ll try to hit you, so stay down, Greta.”

“I’m way ahead of you,” I mutter as I wrap my arms and hands tighter around my neck and head. All I can see is the fabric of my pants.

My body slams into the car door as Aiden takes a sudden turn. I huff, catching my breath.

“Sorry,” he says quickly.

I turn my head slightly so I can see him better. Aiden’s expression is one I’ve never seen on him before. Completely focused. Completely serious. This is no laughing matter. His father wants Aiden under control, and he’ll take me out to achieve that.

“Maybe we should just go back,” I say. “If we do as your father says, maybe he’ll leave us alone.”

Aiden shoots me a look. “Greta, when have you ever listened to authority?” He chuckles slightly as he turns a corner, the car skidding. He straightens and tears off down the road. By the sound of the gunshots, I know we’re still being followed.

“This isn’t really a laughing matter right now,” I say.

“Every day can be made into a laughing matter. It all just depends on how you view it.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m going to die, aren’t I?”

“Not on my watch,” Aiden growls, picking up speed. “Besides, now that I know the lengths my father will go to to end our marriage, I can’t risk him getting his hands on you.”

“But you both said he couldn’t just murder an innocent person.”

“I know. And he can’t. But he’ll do anything in his power to make your death look like an accident. Firing at us is just to scare us. He’ll try to stop us and take you away. And probably kill you after torturing you first.”

“Torturing me?” My voice raises a few octaves. “Why would he want to torture me?”

“Because you’re Italian. He hates everything your family stands for. He’ll try to torture you for information on any Italian business.”

“But I don’t know anything! My father kept me in the dark.” I wince as Aiden slams on the breaks and the seatbelt cuts into my skin. He resumes driving, trying to accelerate. “Besides, my father is pathetic. He doesn’t have the same fame he used to have.”

“No, but your sister is married to Gabriel Moretti. And he’s in power right now. He’ll try to extract information from you.”

A loud bang hits the car. Probably another bullet, but I’m too scared to look. I don’t want to risk getting a bullet in the brain.

“But I don’t know anything about that either! Gabriel and I are not exactly on speaking terms, and Eva doesn’t tell me a damn thing about her marriage or her husband’s business dealings.
