Chapter Twenty-Five

LEWIS RETRIEVES A UNIFORM from a closet near the door of the training center. “Here.” He hands it to me and turns his back.

After he finished with my legs then my arms, I feel shaky but better. All that remains of the wounds are red welts which are disappearing, too, but my uniform is mangled beyond decency. I slip on the new one.

“Ya know, it’s probably not smart for you to turn your back on me in here. Gentlemanly, yes, smart, not so much.” I zip the front and sit to put my boots back on.

He turns around. “You won’t hurt me.”

“Oh really? You’re so sure of that.” I raise one finger, ticking off reasons to juice him up. “One, you are my captor. Two, you just caused me a great deal of pain. Three, and most important, you killed my friend, Mr. Lewis.”

He raises his hand to count off as well. “One, I have been ordered to be your captor. Two, you would never have healed without my help. Three, things aren’t always the way they seem. Maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do, One.”

I put both hands on my hips. “Yeah, enlighten me then.”

He turns and starts for the door. “You wouldn’t believe me anyway. You’ve got your mind all made up about me, about my grandfather, about the Liaisons.” He stops and waits for me in front of the door.

“So change my mind.” We leave the training center and begin our trek back to my room.

Lewis nods to several men we meet in the hallways but doesn’t speak again until he opens my door with the keypad. After I’m inside, he turns to me.

“Well? I can’t wait to hear this.” I keep my voice bland when really I’m about to pee my pants to find out some more info.

“Well, for starters, you don’t know anything about what we do here. You have to be invited to join this force. Don’t roll your eyes! I was invited because of my grandfather’s connection to the Liaisons.” He pauses and studies his feet. “Commander Matthews thought I might have inherited his abilities, but when I didn’t manifest any power, he kept me anyway.”

“What exactly do the ‘Liaisons’ do?” I move to the arm chair, prop my feet on the ottoman, and take off my boots.

“We’re a secret organization. We’re the group the government calls when a situation requires special care—unofficial and top secret. We are the Extrasensory Vital Information Liaisons,” he says, puffing out his chest.

“E. V. I. L.? Seriously? You are actually telling me that you work for a group called EVIL? That’s about the corniest thing I’ve ever heard! Is that how they sign your paycheck?” I snort a laugh.

His face tightens defensively. “Don’t laugh, One. You work for them now, too. We’re a lot stronger than you think. The Liaisons have been around for a long time. My grandfather didn’t even know exactly how long, but he was a young teenager when he joined, and it was well-established already then.
