TRAVEL

AFAR Editor in Chief Julia Cosgrove describes how travel can teach us empathy by starting with respecting the culture and history of every community we visit. She quotes David Mura and his book A Stranger’s Journey: Race, Identity, and Narrative Craft in Writing: “We are not all-knowing creatures . . . if we . . . walk into a village of strangers, we are suddenly aware that there are other ways of looking at the world; there are other ways of looking at ourselves, at who we are, at our place in the world, at the ways we identify ourselves.”175

Expatriation is the ultimate empathy experience in that sense. The first time I moved to the US from France, before the internet and cell phones, I experienced this feeling very profoundly. Having to “learn the ropes” of a new environment means you need to have empathy for the people and their culture and for yourself as you are discovering the extent of your strengths . . . and of your weaknesses.

Now, let’s say we cannot travel far away. We can still explore our neighborhood and have a similar experience, for instance by volunteering or going to a museum. A visit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture is an example of an empathy-provoking experience.176 I can only confirm that this museum is a jewel, informing the visitor with facts—some very cruel—while celebrating the beauty of this specific culture: yes, definitely a journey in empathy!
