Sage frowned at the little plastic bottle for a long, long time, her mind pulling her this way and that. But finally, she unscrewed the top.

A rustling came from behind her. Sage spun round, dropped the bottle. Then a smile broke out all over her face.

‘Hi!’ she said, as the Green Vampire rose up from the gorse bushes. Jay saw the human vigilante from a long way off. The vigilante wasn’t trying to conceal himself. He came swaggering along the river bank in full view, his rifle over his shoulder. As far as he was concerned, humans had regained control. They were back in their rightful place, as masters of the planet.

‘Hey,’ he greeted Jay, with a friendly grin. ‘How you doing?’

‘You just come from the swamplands?’ Jay asked him, a terrible dread already clutching his heart.

‘Yeah. Just got one of those green vermin,’ bragged the vigilante, bursting with pride. ‘It was a Venus Angel. Shot it right out of the sky. My best shot ever. Hope they believe me back home because – ’

‘You stupid, murdering scumbag!’ screamed Jay.

As Jay yelled abuse, bafflement and then rage crossed the vigilante’s face.

‘You’re one of those of those green freak lovers, aren’t you?’ sneered the vigilante, taking his rifle from his shoulder. ‘One of those crazies that talk crap like, “We mustn’t wipe out an entire species.” Like, “They’ve got a right to live.” You’re as bad as them!’

But Jay was already gone, sprinting away from the river bank. He plunged back into the shadowy forest, zig-zagging between trees, so, if the vigilante decided to bring him down, he couldn’t get a clear shot.
