Chapter 20

Lily

Ronan and my father agreed with me about pushing up the wedding date. My wedding date was then changed from 2 weeks to less then 3 days.

In those 3 days everything had to be rearranged. From the church to the reception venue.

Most people were accommodating to the sudden change in date but I think it had more to do with their fear of my groom and the amount of money being thrown at them to pull it off.

Today is my wedding day.

I had loathed the idea of my wedding from the moment I found out and here I am, praying for this day to come sooner.

My dress is modest and simple with long lace sleeves and a sweetheart neckline.

I had envisioned my wedding dress since I was a child. Back then I dreamt of getting married to man who loved and cherished me for once.

As I look at the mirror, I see and feel nothing. I am nothing more than a shell trying to survive.

My mama comes into the bridal suite and looks at me with awe. This is the first time she has ever looked at me like this.

For years I have begged and pleaded for her and papa’s attention and for once I have it but can’t accept it.

I betrayed them and they don’t even know it.

“You look beautiful, Lily. Of course, you would be on the happiest day of your life. My wedding day was mine, that and when I had your brother.”

Of course, she wouldn’t mention when she had me. I don’t say anything or react, instead I turn and face the mirror.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a part of her knew I wasn’t worthy of her love and attention. The first chance I was away from home I risked everything.

My mother continues talking about something, but I don’t hear it. All I hear is how unworthy I am. I am a traitor and a failure to my family.

“Lily, are you listening to me?” I hear my mama ask. I turn to face her, and she continues with whatever she is going on about without waiting for a reply from me.

I hear a knock on the door before it opens and my brother Enzo pops his head in. “Is it okay if I come in?”

I give him a small nod giving him permission to enter.

My brother turns to my mama. “Papa is looking for you.”

My mama turns and heads to the door. “I’ll be right back.” I want to tell her don’t bother, I don’t deserve it, but I keep it to myself with all the other secrets and betrayals.

My brother stands to the side of the room staring at me. “You remember what I told you, Lily. Two or three years only. I promise.” His emerald eyes, similar to mine, scan over my face. I wonder if he can see the shame on it.

I raise my head to my brother and instantly my eyes well up with tears. I try and force them away. “Enzo, I don’t think I will make it that long.
