Chapter 11
When we got to the jail, Chris showed his ID card to the guard at the gate and handed him a stack of papers. As the guard leafed through the papers, Chris turned to us. âThe papers let him know who we are and why we are here. Theyâll also let the warden know Iâm authorized to receive Dr. Rogers.â
âEverything looks good, Agent Marshall.â The guard handed Chris back the stack of papers. âIâll just need your gun before you go on.â
Chris passed his Sig readily to the guard.
âThe rest of them, too. The guard raised an eyebrow and kept his hand out. âIâve dealt with you SATURN guys enough to know youâre loaded.â
With a short chuckle, Chris threw the car into park and leaned down to pull a small pistol from his ankle. âGlove compartment, Matt.â
I leaned forward to look over Mattâs shoulder as he opened the glove compartment, pulled out a gun and a pair of spare magazines, and handed them to his brother.
âPop the trunk.â The guard took the weapons Chris offered and nodded to the rear of the car.
Chrisâs shoulders tensed, but he didnât argue as he popped the trunk and watched in the side mirror as the guard lifted out a pair of suitcases.
âYou can pick it all back up on the way out.â The guard stashed the suitcases in the gatehouse and waved us forward.
âHe wasnât kidding when he said you guys were loaded, was he?â I knew Chris was a trained law enforcement officer, but seeing that kind of firepower made me feel just a little more impressed.
âOne of those suitcases was my clothes.â Chris laughed as he pulled ahead. âJust be glad he only asked for the guns. If I had to give him the rest of my gear, weâd be here all day.â
He found a parking spot near the front of the main building and turned off the car. He had chosen the closest spot, but we were still parked several rows from the door.
âYou guys stay here,â he reminded us as he got out of the car. âGo ahead and change seats, but donât leave the vehicle for any other reason. Iâll be back with Dr. Rogers in a little while. You may as well watch for us and pick us up at the door.â
As Chris headed toward the entrance, Matt slid over to the driverâs side and I moved up to the front beside him. Then we settled down with some homework weâd brought with us to kill time while we waited.
After about an hour, Matt elbowed me. âChrisâs coming out. That must be Dr. Rogers with him.â
I put down my homework and looked up. Chris was talking with a tall, thin man with dark hair and glasses. The man looked weary and apprehensive, as if he thought his release were too good to be true.
âHereâs where we come in.â Matt stuffed his homework into his backpack and started the car.
He pulled the car out of its parking spot and down the row.
