Still stinging from the earful he’d received from Sam over his mess-up yesterday, Kevin wasn’t in the best of moods. Operating a skeleton staff of security with a poker tournament going on, thanks to the ill-timed housewarming party, wasn’t helping either.

He’d let Sam down over that identification and it bothered him, not only because he’d failed to check who he’d instructed the boys to interrogate, but because Sam had been so livid.

He hadn’t realised quite how much of a sensitive topic this was for her until he’d seen her out-of-character reaction. She’d been about to have the man exterminated and that had taken him by surprise.

No one could abide nonce wankers, but to have a personal connection made things so much worse. Now Neil Stoker had filled him in on Sam’s biological mother’s history, he understood her obsession.

Kevin scowled at the upcoming rotas on his desk.

He’d let Sam down big time. His slackness had made it look like she’d screwed up.

Nailing the bastard she had her sights set on was now his mission. So much so that he’d pulled off half his available men to actively scout the area and when his men next eyeballed a likely contender or a red VW Golf, he’d personally make sure it was the correct target before it went any further. He would not embarrass Sam again.

Kevin’s head snapped up with a knock to the door. ‘Yeah?’

Craig entered Kevin’s office. ‘We’ve got a suspicious one in tonight!’

Kevin inwardly sighed. ‘Go on.’

Craig’s huge frame filled half of the room. ‘There’s a guy who no one’s seen before. A smarmy fucker – bit weird looking.’

‘I don’t give a fuck what he looks like. What’s he done?’

‘Nothing as yet,’ Craig said, ‘but the croupier flagged him up for being a possible card shark. He’s won two sit-downs already.’

Kevin shrugged. ‘It’s not unusual to win two games. It’s a tournament night!’

‘There’s something about him that’s not the ticket. He’s, well… odd… and he’s wearing gloves… it’s fucking weird, if you ask me.’

‘Gloves?’

‘Yeah, those weird fabric white ones – think of Michael Jackson or the sort worn when handling priceless artefacts or posh books, sort of thing. Know what I mean?’

Kevin sighed impatiently. No, he didn’t know what Craig meant and neither did he want to. He hadn’t got time for this.

‘I think one of us should keep tabs on him.’

‘We haven’t got the manpower for that tonight,’ Kevin snapped. ‘Half the shift are outside policing; two are working that party and the ones left, including you, are monitoring the casino. We can’t take one of you off to watch Gloveman!’ And he wasn’t pulling in one of the men from outside to monitor someone who looked like he ‘might’ play dirty at ‘some point’.

It wasn’t best use of his men and would only cause more unrest if he sanctioned that. ‘If the situation changes, then let me know, but only if it does,’ he continued. ‘And that doesn’t mean purposely standing there waiting for it.’

Craig shrugged his huge shoulders.
