VELVET WAS STILL SIGHING A few minutes later when Marie knocked at her bedroom door.

Velvet called out for her to enter, and when she did, she was chattering about some nonsense when she saw Velvet’s face.

“Mais non...something is not quite right,” Marie said, and sat beside Velvet on her bed.

“Oh, Marie, I made a terrible mess of it today,” Velvet said with feeling. Then as it all accumulated and burst out of her, she suddenly found herself crying.

“Vraiment, what are these tears? Who has done this to you? A man, no doubt. It is a man. It is always a man. Bah! They do not have hearts. Tell me so Marie can go and destroy this man.”

Velvet giggled and sniffed away her tears. Marie took her hands. “Ma petite laughs! Bien, it is moi who makes you laugh. I come and have already made you happy. I, you see, am a woman!”

Velvet bent over with mirth, and found it a great release from the emotions of the day. She laughed and laughed and hugged her cousin. “Marie, I do so love you!”

“Oui, it is so, and I love you. Now you will tell Marie why there were tears, oui?”

“It has been a most horrible day...” Velvet started, then thought of the marquis’ kiss. She wasn’t going to mention that. It wouldn’t do. “You will be ashamed of me when you hear.”

“Non, of this be certain. I cannot be ashamed of you. Moi, I did many, oh many naughty things when I was your age.”

“Marie, you are only a few years older now,” Velvet said on a laugh, then sighed. “I broke the rules in a thoughtless and dangerous way. You would never have been so bad.”

“Tiens! Tell me, and we shall compare badness, eh?”

Velvet then went into a lengthy description of her ride on Sinbad, and the marquis’ part in teasing her into a temper, ending with a shake of her head and saying, “Marie...that little child! My thoughtless behavior could have gotten him injured...or worse.”

“Ah, so tell me, did you do this just to be bad?” Marie asked glibly.

“No, no, of course not. I do put some blame on Dusty...though most of it on me. Even though he provoked me, I should not have been so awfully thoughtless.”

“Ah, so you lost your temper, voila, and cantered off. Have you never seen me do that in the park with my own beloved Condé?”

“Yes, well...I suppose, but not like this...”

“Because you were on Sinbad. He wants schooling, but you stopped him, did you not?”

“Yes, but...”

“And you see why the rule of galloping applies in the park. You see it now, bien. ’Tis well.”

Velvet laughed. “It was dreadful of me, whatever you say, and Dusty is very cross with me.”

“Oui, very dreadful, you are bad, very bad, and no doubt you gave our Dusty a fright, but tomorrow, you will be better, for such is life. You have had a lesson you shall never forget.”

“Indeed, a horrible one. How will Dusty forgive me?”

“Silly Velvet,” Marie said.
