They made the quick trip to the Powell’s parking garage and walked across Burnside. Josh held the outer door open for Pax to enter. He seemed to like that, so he did it again at the top of the stairs. The foyer was empty, which shouldn’t have been a surprise but was. Josh resisted the urge to step behind the desk and make sure everything was in its place.

“That’s a bright purple key card.” Pax smiled but Josh heard some tension beneath it.

“Owner keys are purple. Amy’s idea.” Josh slid a hand across Pax’s shoulders and was a little surprised when he stepped close and snaked both hands around Josh’s neck.

“Tell me I’m nuts to be nervous.”

Josh looked into Pax’s soulful eyes and gave him a lingering kiss before answering. He rested his hands on Pax’s waist, loving the feel of solid man beneath his soft shirt. “You’re not nuts. I’d be nervous walking into a room filled with people you know and I don’t.”

“You didn’t seem nervous at the fundraiser.”

“That’s because I’m also a badass. My superpower is being in a crowded room and covering any nervousness with aggressive charm.”

Pax frowned. “Not sure I like the sound of that. Don’t put yourself down, Josh.”

“Okay.” The kind of tension that washed over Josh when Pax said something sweet wasn’t so easy to hide, so Josh opened the door to the lounge.

Only about twenty people sat in small groups chatting, and a cursory sweep of the room told Josh that nobody was getting up to anything sexy. He wasn’t sure why that mattered except that he wanted Pax to be comfortable there. That might best be accomplished by a slow warm-up.

They hadn’t quite made it to the bar when Josh heard a squeal. Amy rushed out from behind the bar and stopped before tackle-hugging him, but it was close. He hadn’t wanted to let go of Pax, but he also wanted a hello hug from Amy, so he had to. After she squeezed him silly, she stepped back and regarded Pax.

“Nice to see you again. Welcome to our little club.”

“Thanks. Nice to see you again too. I would apologize for keeping Josh away, but I’m not sorry.”

Amy laughed and rested a hand on his arm for a moment. “You’ll fit right in here, hon. Can I get you guys something to drink?”

Josh and Pax slid up onto bar stools and chatted with Amy and Wes, who was taking a short shift behind the bar, while they ate appetizers and nursed their drinks. Josh waited until Pax had relaxed and the last of the tightness in his voice had disappeared before suggesting they head to his room. Pax’s smoky smile did wonderful things to Josh’s insides.

“I should tell you, I’m a little nervous to see your room.”

“Why?” Josh guided Pax toward the alcoves and the hallway beyond, a little disappointed that the only things going on there were drinking and laughing.

“I’m not sure.” Pax rested his head against Josh’s and then laughed softly.
