Chapter 21
The neighbor, a white-haired man named Warren Vonn, stood in his driveway, leaning against the side of his blue Dodge truck. We’d told him about the body and that we were looking for his neighbor. His response to that information was mostly centered around the fact that the house was going to be empty again and the dead body was going to hurt it selling and, in turn, the resale of his house. I was working on getting him back on the topic of answering my questions.
“So, it was Xcellent Inspections Inc?” I asked. “With no E in the first word?”
“That’s what it says on the side of the truck, yes,” he said.
I wrote the information down in my notepad. We would have to get the fact that Garner’s business name was on the vehicle added to our BOLO for it.
“I think it actually says it on the truck’s back glass, as well,” he added. “You can’t miss the truck. It’s a real bright blue.”
I nodded and added the detail to my notes. “And you saw it here earlier today?”
“A couple hours ago,” he said.
“Any other vehicles today?”
“There was a car there, as well. White one. It looked fancy. Some kind of newer luxury car. What exactly it was, I couldn’t tell you.”
“Did you see who it belonged to?”
The neighbor shook his head.
“What can you tell me about the homeowner there? Shane Garner?”
“I don’t know. Single guy. He moved in a couple years ago, said he used to live a few miles away. From the sound of it, he was recently divorced at the time. The house here was for sale for almost a year before he bought it. The family of original owners, the Kenworths, just kept dumping the price on the place. It needed a hell of a lot of work. Tom and Mary Kenworth were older and kind of let the property fall into disrepair. Shane bought it and started fixing it up. He actually told me that he’d inspected the place for another couple that backed out of the sale prior to purchasing it himself.”
The home’s history wasn’t going to do much to lead me to the homeowner. “Did you ever notice any women over here? Do you know if he had a girlfriend?”
“Not that I ever saw.”
“He has a daughter, though, right?”
“Yeah. She used to come around every other weekend or so. I think her name was Megan or Maggie or something with an M. Margaret maybe. I’d only said hi to her a handful of times.”
“Teenager?” I asked.
“She was high school aged from what I could tell. I haven’t seen her around here in some time, though.”
“What else do you know about him? Personally.”
“I guess not a ton. Building inspector. I think he works residential mostly. He’s quiet. I’ve never really seen big groups of people next door. He’s never made much noise. Seems like he mows his lawn Saturday mornings, for the most part. He likes to take his trash out the night before pickup.
