Chapter Fourteen

Tripping over my pant legs, I finally get them up. My eyes scan the room in search of my shirt. Fuck. Where is it?

“Wyatt?” Marni yells from outside the room. “Tommy?” How the hell does she know we’re here. My eyes dart to Wyatt—wide and angry.

My jaw clenches, and I mutter, “What did you do?” He looks apologetic and worried, so I know he got her here somehow.

Wyatt tosses my shirt at me then proceeds to pull up the zipper on his pants. Running my fingers through my hair, I attempt to tame the loose strands falling carelessly over my forehead. I give Wyatt a once-over and make sure he’s decent before gripping the handle. Ready or not.

As soon as I pull the door open, I’m face to face with Marni, who’s got her hands on her hips and a grimace on her face. “What the hell are you doing here, Marni?” My heart is pounding in my chest and my palms are sweating like rain clouds.

“I could ask you two the same thing?” She points between Wyatt and me. “What is this?”

“Well, I’m not killing him if that's what you’re thinking?” I slide past her and walk into the kitchen to avoid her seeing the apprehension that’s written all over my face.

“Are you ok?” I hear her ask Wyatt.

Their voices carry into the kitchen while I stand there with my palms pressed to the counter.

“I’m fine. Why did you come here?”

“Because you never listen to me. And when I noticed your location came on, I figured you did it because you needed help.”

“Everything is fine. Do you know something I don’t, because you’re acting really weird lately?”

“Marni,” I holler. “Can I talk to you? Alone.”

Once she rounds the corner, I nod toward the door. “Outside.”

Her eyes roll, but her feet move and I follow behind her. “Care to explain to me what the hell is going on?” I step outside and pull the door closed.

“I was worried about him.”

“Ok,” I nod, “so, you decide to track him down and drive an hour just to make sure he’s ok?”

“What’s going on with you lately, Tommy? You’ve been a mess and this vendetta against Wyatt is getting out of control.”

Grabbing her by the arm, I point to the tattoo on her wrist. “Do you see this? It’s a fucking oath. A pact you took. So let me ask you again, what the fuck are you doing here?”

She jerks her arm back and snarls, “He’s my best friend! I won’t let you hurt him.”

“Would you let him hurt me? Or Talon? Or Lars and Willa? Huh? Answer that.”

She shakes her head. “What? No! I wouldn’t.”

“And what makes you so sure he hasn’t already? He could have been the one who hit Josh. He could know what we’ve all been doing this entire time. How do you know you can trust him?”

I don’t think Wyatt knows any of this and I don’t think he’s out to get us, but I’m still not one-hundred percent sure I can fully trust him.
