Nicholai carried her up the stairs and laid her gently on his bed. He wasn’t going to think about Helena or Asmos or what was going to happen tomorrow. Tonight he would only think about the fact that this beautiful woman was in his bed and willing to help him find Marcos.

And for that, he loved her.

She’d turned her back on the only family she had left and defied her brother’s wishes. With her map he might be able to rescue Marcos without having to resort to using Asmos’s power. And if it was true that Christos’s men were being held prisoner, too, then Christos could be all the help he needed.

Perhaps by sunrise this whole nightmare would be over and he would be able to spend a few days in New England with a beautiful green-eyed witch.

He lay down on the bed next to her, brushing the hair off her face. She kissed him again, bold and brave, her lips moving over his, exploring, tasting, lingering, almost as if she were memorizing the feel of him.

“You are so beautiful,” he said, liking the way the firelight glinted off her face. She looked at him differently than anyone ever had before—as a mere man, instead of a monster. It was exhilarating and a little unnerving at the same time.

She was a witch. She could read him. But she didn’t know him well enough to know how many times he’d given in to his baser desires, ignoring what he knew was right in order to achieve what he wanted.

No, she couldn’t know or she wouldn’t be here with him now. She saw only his heart—a heart he thought had withered up and died.

He rolled over on top of her and took her hands in his, raising them above her head, lifting her breasts high.

He nuzzled her neck. “You smell delicious,” he whispered. He longed to take a sweet drink, to really taste her, to know all of her. But he promised he would not hurt her. And he wouldn’t. Not even a little sip.

Not tonight.

He released her hands. She reached for him, taking her time unbuttoning his shirt. “This time when we make love, I want it to be slow. I want it to last,” she said, and leaned forward to kiss the skin exposed by each undone button.

He lay still, fighting to keep a strong grip on the control that was quickly slipping through his fingers as she swept his shirt off his shoulders. Her hands caressing his skin promised pleasures to come.

“I don’t want the hurried frenzy of a noisy bar after we’ve had too much to drink, and not enough time to get to know one another,” she continued, pressing her lips against his shoulders. He felt the soft, wet swirl of her tongue. His breath caught in his chest.

He pulled back and took her hands, bringing them up to his lips where he kissed the tips of her fingers. “I like the sound of that. But I must confess that you haven’t given me enough time to really know you.
