By the time we got downstairs, the power still wasn’t back – neither the electric kind, nor the magical kind. Even our walkie-talkies seemed to have gone kaput.

Hugo, Fee, Dora and I sat at the table, a candle flickering between us, talking over the events of the night. We were no nearer to figuring things out when Mick and my grandmother arrived.

‘Take a seat, Olive,’ he said.

My grandmother eased herself down onto the staff room couch, her face pale, her whole body shivering. Dora jumped from her cup and into Gran’s arms. ‘Don’t worry, Olive. I’ll take care of you,’ she said, before promptly falling asleep.

Gran let out a shaky laugh and stroked Dora’s tiny head. ‘She’s so sweet, this one. You’re lucky to have found her, Annie. If only I’d listened to Cassie, and taken her along tonight. Sometimes I think our familiars know far better than we do.’

‘Yes, well, you shall be home to her soon, Olive,’ said Mick, sounding unusually caring. Turning to us, he said, ‘I have filled Olive in on what you have been looking for, and why. I can tell that you’ve filled Fee and Jake in too. So now, since I noticed you placing the chalice in your bag, we had better get going with the ritual.’

‘Um, how can we?’ Fee held her hands out in a questioning gesture. ‘No one seems to have magic, Mick, so a magical ritual might run into difficulties, don’t you think?’

‘Witch magic is gone,’ he informed her. ‘I assure you, my own powers are just fine. Where is Jake?’

‘Jake’ll be here in a minute,’ Hugo said. ‘He wanted to stay with Karen while my father and Laurie moved her mother’s body.’

Through gritted teeth, Mick said, ‘I see. And does he know his ex-girlfriend is an Enchantra-Dancer?’

While Hugo shook his head, Fee warily eyed the vampire. ‘Jake would have told us anything he thought we needed to know – this pact is as important to him as it is to the rest of us. But you clearly knew all about Karen’s creepy gift, didn’t you? You don’t think you should have maybe told Annie?’

‘I guessed it, yes,’ Mick admitted. ‘But by then it was clear you had guessed, too, Miss Ever Observant. And given Annie has finally – sensibly – enlisted your help in completing her quest, I assumed you would share your observations with her.’

‘She did,’ I said. ‘That’s not the point, Mick, and you know it. But I can get angry with you later on, when there’s more time. When Jake gets here we’ll do the pact, but until then we should talk about the fact that there’s still a killer in this museum. Irene was the chalice thief, but seeing as she’s now dead, someone else must be the murderer. Which means … I dunno … maybe she was working with someone else. Someone who double-crossed her. Someone who killed her, before she could use the chalice for herself?’
