CHAPTER THREE
âYou know that you donât have to do this, Taylor,â said Hannah
âI donât mind coming with you to the registrarâs office. Itâs nice out, and Iâve been cooped up inside all day. Gotta enjoy the autumn weather while it lasts.â
âYou know thatâs not what I mean. And itâs technically still summer until the 22nd.â
âYouâre such a nerd, Hannah.â
âIâll take that as a compliment.â
âYou should. Itâs weird that weâd be in school during the summer, though. Seems⦠wrong somehow.â Taylor had experienced a variety of summer climates in all the moves she experienced growing up, and September in New York City didnât feel particularly summery in comparison. It was sunny and warm enough, but the breeze felt crisp on her cheeks, and it hinted of cooler weather to come. âAnd is it really still September?â
âApparently so,â said Hannah.
âWow. I feel like this might be the longest month of my life.â
âTell me about it, hon. But seriously, to the point, I want to be sure that this isnât something you are going to regret.â
âI donât think this could be any worse than having to listen to you complain about computer programming all semester,â Taylor said, giving Hannah a playful nudge. âBesides, I like the idea of having you in one or two of my classes. Just not all of my classes.â
âOkay⦠As long as you mean it.â
âI do. We just need to strike a balance.â
âThat sounds good to me, hon. Just make sure that youâ¦. Wait.â
âMake sure that I wait?â
âNo, I mean wait. Stop. Look,â Hannah pointed ahead at the corner where Guardian Square Park began.
âUh huh. Thatâs the park. Same as always.â The view from the street was just brick walls and tree tops, but it all looked familiar.
âBut thatâs what I was talking about earlier. Donât you think thatâs just a little bit weird?â
âI think everything in my life is weird right now.â Granted, this was the kind of weird that she should have had every reason to take note of, but now she just wanted to leave it alone. While the park did look exactly as it had when she first arrived at school, that was exactly how it shouldnât look given recent events.
âWe should go check this out. Donât think you think, Taylor?â Hannah had that little twinkle of eager curiosity in her eye, but Taylor did not share the feeling. Taylor wanted nothing to do with the place and its mysteries.
âNo. I really donât.â Taylor stopped and stood still, and Hannah was halfway down the block before she realized that she had been too busy staring at the trees to notice that Taylor wasnât following.
âCâmon, donât you think itâs a little odd that the trees are all back in place?â Hannah asked.
âNo, I donât think itâs a little odd. I think itâs a lot odd. Everything about this park is weird and awful.â
âExactly. Thatâs why we need to investigate.â
âCan I remind you that itâs dangerous in there? I have shed blood literally every other time Iâve stepped foot inside that stupid place.
