Chloe ran into the woods. Her eyes were still stinging and tears were running down her cheeks. From the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of a blue flashing light. She crouched down behind a tree and looked back at the road. The police were inspecting the moped she had stolen. She had watched enough car-chase reality TV shows to know you ditched the vehicle before they sent the helicopter after you; once the helicopter got a fix on you there was no escape. She had thought she would have had more time before they caught up with her—damned efficient police force, why couldn’t they be the more stereotypically slow-witted doughnut chompers? She was in trouble and she would need a lot of luck to get out of this one. She headed further into the trees as quickly and quietly as she could, silently cursing the two Daves as she went. Chloe had planned the robbery herself and, although it had not quite gone to plan, it would have been a lot less of a disaster if her accomplices hadn’t been a pair of stoner fuck-ups.
A week earlier she had been on the phone trying to explain to the Social Security Office that she had no money. According to some government minister (no-doubt on a salary of £400, 000) the ordinary Joe-on-the-street could live on £53.95 per week. With bills for electric, phone, heating and credit card debts that she had had before losing her job, Chloe was asking them how she was expected to eat. In their usual robotic manner they fobbed her off with ideas about loans that could be paid back by being automatically deducted from her social security cheque—now that was a bright idea; of course, she could clear her debts easily if they gave her less money every week. After a string of obscenities, Chloe slammed the phone down and tried to think of a way out of her predicament. The TV in the corner caught her attention for a second as it laughed and then groaned, like a terminal patient who is briefly amused and then remembers his situation. TV Licensing were also demanding their money and threatening a £1000 fine if Miss C. Knight didn’t pay immediately.
Less than two months ago she had been a police officer, now she was about to embark on a life of crime. It was kind of funny, but she wasn’t laughing. The one and only time she had tried a line of cocaine at a party was enough to get her fired. She wondered if PC Wilkins had known they were having a drug test the next day; he didn’t take any. Wilkins had asked her out and she had turned him down flat, but such a point wasn’t even worth airing at her hearing, even though it probably was why he did it. Chloe walked over to the mirror and looked at herself. She had dyed her shoulder-length hair traffic-light-red, something she had always wanted to do but the police wouldn’t allow.
