Becky locked the door after Two left and went to check on Skylar. She was sound asleep in her bed, with her foot sticking out of the covers. Becky tucked Skylar’s foot back under her covers, and took a moment to look down at her daughter, watching her sleep. They’d both been through so much in the last couple of days, and she was shocked at how well Skylar had adjusted and just rolled with the punches. She smiled as Skylar shifted in her sleep, yanking at the covers until her little foot popped out again.

No, she shouldn’t have been surprised at all. Skylar was so much like Aiden, she always had been. She was adaptive to anything new that came her way. As long as she had her mother, and a warm place to sleep and food to eat, she was up for just about anything that came their way.

But this? The Variant males as they called themselves, and the circumstances that brought them all together… that was too much for most adults to fathom, much less a four-year-old girl. “I have a lot to consider,” she said quietly, speaking to Skylar though she was asleep. “This may not be what’s best for you. I’m pretty sure it’s not.”

Becky tucked Skylar in once more, leaving her foot outside the covers this time, then went to her own room to shower and go to bed. Standing in the shower, she let the steamy water flow down over her face and head while she went over and over in her mind all Two had told her. She sobbed thinking of all she’d lost, all Aiden had lost. Then she thought of all the women that Aiden, now Valor, had surely been given. Now she understood why he’d told her not to ask about any woman she may run into — he didn’t want to think about it anymore than she did, and he most likely didn’t want her to know. She thought of all the other males and females in Alliance and all they’d lost. She thought of the tragedy every man and woman in this place had survived. No one in this place was untouched. Even those that had been brought in by General Ferriday to help the Variant overcome their abuses, were affected deeply by all they learned the males and females had been exposed to, and that brought on another round of tears.

Exhausted, both emotionally and physically, Becky got out of the shower and dried off. She put Two’s teeshirt back on to sleep in, as she had the night before, then climbed in bed with her hair still wrapped in a towel, and was deeply asleep almost as her head hit the pillow.
