“HAMBURG? What the hell is he doing in Hamburg?”

Gray cleared his throat and considered how best to answer that one.

Fisherwick had taken over a spare office in Cairngul and turned it into his own personal headquarters. Like many little men, he felt having his own office granted him some sort of superiority over other people.

Gray reflected that maybe this was why Fisherwick didn’t like working in a team. He wanted to be above others, not alongside them.

The Directorate, on the other hand, was a close-knit organisation. Doing what they did — seeing what they saw — they didn’t take to strangers very well. Even though some of them hated each other — like Drake and Valentine — they knew in the field their survival depended on working together.

They had no time for people who cowered behind desks.

“I specifically ordered him not to go to Germany!” Fisherwick snapped. “Specifically! I don’t understand why you tolerate his constant insubordination.”

“Valentine is allowed a certain latitude in his work, I’ll grant you.”

“Latitude?” Fisherwick hissed, furiously polishing his glasses. “Latitude? He does whatever the hell he wants!” He rested his elbows on the desk they’d found for him. It was a metal government surplus monstrosity dating back to the seventies, infested with rust and utterly without character.

Gray thought he quite suited it.

“First he assaults me, one of his superiors,” Fisherwick went on, wagging his finger. “Then he runs off to Germany and along the way beats up and kidnaps another member of your team! The man is out of control!”

Gray cleared his throat again. “Valentine has been under a great deal of pressure…”

“Don’t give me that! Why must you continually make excuses for him?”

“Because he has the highest rate of successful operations the Directorate has ever seen,” Gray said smoothly.

“That’s irrelevant.”

“Irrelevant?” Gray repeated. “I don’t see…”

“Have him arrested,” Fisherwick said, sliding his glasses back on. “I want the German authorities alerted. Find him and bring him in.”

“But if he’s getting close to Fleischer…”

“Guesswork!” Fisherwick snapped. “He’s operating on guesswork and hearsay!”

“Which is how he normally works,” Gray said drily. “And with great success, I might add.”

Fisherwick shook his head. “Contact the German police and Interpol immediately. I want an arrest and detain order on Valentine by the end of the day.”

Gray sighed, just loud enough for it to be obvious. Fisherwick tilted his head to one side, then narrowed his eyes. “Actually, I’ll get Drake to speak to the Germans,” he said.

“That’s not nec…”

“Yes,” Fisherwick said. “Yes, it is.” He opened a notebook. Gray was appalled to see him taking his pen out of his pocket.

“Now, how are things coming along at Westcastle?”

“Riley is the on site commander,” Gray said. “We have two tactical teams from Lambeth, Technical Services and conventional law enforcement and firefighters.”

“How are you pitching it?”

“An exercise on the back of the fire at Weaver’s Wood.”

Fisherwick blinked behind his glasses. “And if news of it leaks out?”

“Containment will take care of it,” Gray said with a shrug.

“I’ve been thinking about this,” Fisherwick said, tapping his lips with his pen.
