Chapter 13

Vitale

Domenick stared at me as he tore a piece of bread and shoved it into his mouth. Selena, his wife, had made us dinner—a routine that had formed for the past two weeks.

I spend the day with Domenick, figuring out where Luca could have gone. Sometimes I go out with Iggy to collect money or information. Then, in the evening, there’s an enormous meal at the dinner table.

Selena never joins us. She’s too busy with the baby, Romeo.

“Tomorrow, we meet with Pascal,” Domenick mumbled in between bites.

I lowered my spaghetti-wrapped fork and glanced up at my brother. Iggy wasn’t with us tonight. Just me and the head of the family.

“Did he find Angeline?”

Though it had been two weeks, it surprised me we were starting talks again. We had heard nothing about Luca or where he could be.

“No, but they have a younger daughter. She’s seventeen, but will turn eighteen next month.”

Bile rose in my throat. Her father was so willing to move on to his next daughter, and the idea made me sick.

“Well, when she does, I’ll meet her,” I said with a nod and went back to my pasta.

“This isn’t up for discussion, Vitale. We will plan the wedding on her eighteenth birthday.”

I swallowed, and it felt like I was trying to get a rock down my throat. The last thing I wanted to do was marry the Bruno girl—either of them—but I couldn’t let my brother know that.

I had a plan for solving our problems with the Brunos and getting out of the marriage. I had worked on the plan every day for these past two weeks since Emilia had been murdered. It would happen, no matter what.

If it meant I had to go along with pretending to marry a girl I never met, then so be it. Emilia wasn’t around anymore to distract me.

While that thought sent a pain straight into my heart, I had to focus on my revenge.

“Alright. Will I get to meet her tomorrow?”

“Yes. She’ll be there.”

I nodded and went back to my food. But there was something that caused me to put my fork down once again. Something so faint, I thought I had imagined it.

Laughter. A woman laughing.

“Did you hear that?” I asked as I looked out the French doors that led to the marble balcony which overlooked the back gardens.

“Hear what?” Domenick was looking at his phone while continuing to chew on the bread.

“Someone laughing. Is Selena outside with Romeo?”

“She might be. Shit.” Domenick stood and threw his cloth napkin on the table. “I’ve got to head into my office. I’ll be back.”

Though the balcony obscured most of the view, I kept my eye on the backyard as I continued to eat. Even though Domenick insisted I live in his home in order to monitor me, I only ever see Selena at dinner when she greets us with food. And I have only seen Romeo a few times. It’s as if Domenick keeps them hidden, even from his own family.

I continued to hear the woman’s laughter grow louder, and my curiosity got the best of me.
